Evaluation of ZnO Metalworking Nanofluids (MWnF)

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have demonstrated metalworking lubrication improvement, and stand as promising industrial lubricant additives due to their low cost compared to other NPs. While nanomaterials are a focus of research due to their potential to enable advanced technologies, little is known about their effects on the environment and human health. This research investigates two main performance characteristics of ZnO metalworking nanofluids (MWnF). First, ZnO MWnF with various NP concentrations are explored with turning of titanium to understand the effect on cutting performance (e.g., force and temperature). Second, toxicological assessments are conducted to survey ZnO NP safety performance. The results are reported and discussed with regard to how industry and academic research agendas in emerging technologies can be shaped by more comprehensive performance analysis.
