From multichannel analysis to waveform inversion of shallow-seismic surface waves

Surface-wave methods are becoming increasingly popular in near-surface geophysics. One of the most widely used active-source surface-wave methods is the multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW). By extracting and inverting surface-wave dispersion curves and attenuation coefficients, MASW reconstructs near-surface S-wave velocity and quality factor models based on a local 1D approximation. Full-waveform inversion (FWI), which directly invert the observed waveform, provides another approach to reconstruct near-surface physical models. In this paper, we review and compare the methodologies of MASW and FWI, as well as some intermediate approaches between them. We use a field example to show the cons and pros of using MASW and FWI to process shallow-seismic data.
