Unsteady Lagrangian material lines are identified in the simulated two-dimensional unsteady flow in a ramped cavity scramjet combustor. It shown that mass is periodically entrained and ejected at the trailing edge of the ramped cavity. A combination of an impinging shear layer on the ramp and an unsteady oblique shock wave that interacts with the shear layer creates the intrinsic dynamics of the materials lines that are responsible for the net mass flow.
