Waterborne Epoxy Dispersions and Curing Agents for Garage Floor Coatings

Over the past 30 years, the market share of waterborne coatings has increased, driven by the desire to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their impact on human health and the environment. At the same time, properly designed low VOC waterborne systems still need to maintain all of the performance strengths of the high VOC and solventborne coatings currently used. This paper describes some of our work in developing waterborne (WB) coatings designed for concrete garage floor coatings. We have developed waterborne epoxy and amine hardener systems which when properly formulated offer superior performance in garage floor coating applications at very low or even near zero VOC. Clear and pigmented garage floor coating formulas will be described. Various performance aspects of experimental and commercial waterborne garage floor coatings will be compared, including hot tire pickup, abrasion, chemical resistance and low temperature cure properties. Performance of a new generation of waterborne epoxy dispersion in garage floor coatings will also be discussed.
