MODERN HANDLING TECHNOLOGY REDUCES THE IMPACT OF COAL ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Archeological evidence has indicated that surface coal mining and use in household settings dates back to 3490 BC in China.1 During the Industrial Revolution, which initiated in Britain during the 18th century, the main techniques of underground mining were developed and continuously improved during the following centuries. By 2010, coal produced over a fourth of the world's energy, and by 2050 is expected to produce about one-third.2 The advent of increased environmental awareness initiated during the 1970's has drawn more focus on minimizing the impact of coal handling, storage and transport in present day projects and largely determines the viability of the project. This paper will explore numerous coal handling projects where robust environmental regulations require sound technology and innovative thinking.
