Roxas Boulevard Seawall is an important part of the urban transportation infrastructure of Metro Manila. It was overtopped several times in the past decade and was subsequently rebuilt. However, recent strong typhoons caused overtopping even after its rehabilitation in 2012, and it became apparent that a more permanent solution was necessary to mitigate its overtopping due to strong typhoons. A coastal engineering study was undertaken to quantify the hazards, and field surveys and testing were carried out to obtain data for input to preliminary and detailed engineering. This paper discusses the application of wave mechanics, numerical modeling, geotechnical engineering and civil engineering design to the analysis of the hazards and the preliminary engineering to redesign this seawall located along a built-up coastline of Manila Bay.
