Under the wave and current, the suspended sections of the submarine pipelines can easily be subjected to fatigue damage due to vortex-induced vibration. It is particularly important to detect and monitor the vibration of those suspended sections. The new acceleration sensor is designed, which use Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) as the basic sensing element. Then, based on the acceleration sensor, the monitoring system of submarine pipelines vibration is integrated and successfully applied to a submarine pipeline in Bohai Sea. The results demonstrated that the system can monitor the vibration of the submarine pipeline in real-time. After a period of monitoring, the influence of tides and waves on pipeline vibration is analyzed. The pipeline fatigue life assessment process was designed, and according to the three months vibration data, the fatigue life of the tested pipeline was evaluated. This test system is easy to be constructed, performs reliably, achieves high measurement accuracy, and will provide guarantees for the safe operation of submarine pipelines.
