Study on seismic performance evaluation of road embankment along the coast

On the 2011 off the pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake, many of roadembankments along the coast were less damaged. Following this, a lotof municipalities along the coast adopt a road embankment as acountermeasure against tsunami in Japan. This paper aims to makeclear the performance requirements for road embankments in coastalareas. First, we reviewed damage examples of road embankment in theearthquakes, and we focus on two topics. The first concerns thesettlement of road embankment. We introduce our field survey tomeasure the settlement of road embankment behind bridges in Mashikitown, where is damaged by 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. And wepropose a performance index of settlement of the road. The nextconcerns the performance of the reinforced soil wall against tsunami.Here we introduce our water tank experiment to verify tsunamiresistantperformance of the reinforced soil wall. Our experimentalresults showed that reinforced soil wall has high stability againsttsunami if there no gap of front panels. From these results, weconfirmed that it is important to determine the tolerance level tosettlement of embankment even when we perform the capacity designof road embankment along the coast.
