The new BMW 7 series introduces several innovative advanced driver assistance systems, such as the Steering and Lane Control assistant including Traffic Jam assistant, the Lane Keeping assistant with active side collision protection and Remote Control Parking. These functions are milestones on the road to highly automated driving. The environment model plays a central part in these innovations, as it provides necessary information of the vehicle's surroundings on which the functions base their actions. The environment model fuses the sensor data, consolidates the available information and provides consistent interfaces to the customer functions. This facilitates a decoupling of sensors and customer functions. The first generation of the BMW environment model, which has been developed in-house, is launched in the new BMW 7 series. Further generations will follow as it is one of the key enablers on the road to highly automated driving.
