Structural steel fire protection with Intumescent coatings has become a common practice; there are extensive legislations in most countries to regulate access to this market and the use of these technologies. Thanks to their continuous technical innovations, reliability and ease of use, intumescent paints are gaining share in the passive fire protection markets.A review of the actual status of European Union regulations and standards is presented and the consequences described. The main parameters for Intumescent coatings to meet such EU postulations are analysed and discussed.Fingerprinting and external exposure of reactive coatings are deeply evaluated.Paint stability reveals as a key factor for the correct installation following the principles of"installed as tested".Factors influencing such negative behaviour are identified and discussed.
