Commercial Grade Dedication of Digital Systems using EPRI TR-106439 from a Utility Perspective

Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) of digital equipment is a significant challenge for utilities. EPRI TR-106439 is the NRC endorsed methodology via Regulatory Guide 1.152 to use for digital CGD but it is only a methodology, not an implementation document. Utilities have to ensure the EPRI methodology is implemented for the specific safety function application with an adequate level of documented proof for reasonable assurance that the equipment will perform its safety function. Through many years of lessons learn in this area, this paper will examine the problem areas, what one utility is doing to implement digital CGD, and alternate approaches to simplify the digital CGD implementation process.
