Over the past several years, Bechtel has been challenging senior mechanical engineering students from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) with real world problems in support of the Senior Design Program. During a recent challenge, the aspiring engineers were challenged with the question “When space is limited how can you measure flow using differential pressure measurement and how can you certify the installation for custody transfer.” In other words, what can be done if there isn’t enough physical space to meet code requirements? This paper outlines the structure of the Senior Design Project program at UCCS. In responding to this specific challenge, the student turned to CFD Modeling and with somewhat surprising results, present a solution that is realistic and verifiable. The paper shows the solution to the paper as the students progressed through the program to the end. The paper also discusses verification through testing in a laboratory to certify for custody transfer.
