Lawsonia intracellularis, the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy, is an obligate intracellular bacterium and, therefore, fecal shedding of and oral fluid contamination by this organism are routinely detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).1,2 Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a gene amplification method which is carried out at a constant temperature using a single enzyme and is evaluated visually.3 LAMP has the potential to be used pen-side as it requires minimal expertise, cost and equipment to perform as compared to PCR-based assays.
