In the oil and gas industry, it is the case that after the drilling of a well the actual trajectory will not match the planned trajectory. Trajectory planning for drilling of hydrocarbon reservoirs is very important, be it vertical, deviated or horizontal. The target, the formation type to be penetrated, the arrangement of BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly) to be used and the total depth of drilling, all must be considered in the planning. Previous trajectory deviation studies of directional drilling focused on BHA and drilling techniques. This paper investigates the influence of formation lithology on directional drilling trajectory deviation on Wells X in Field Y, located in Sanga-Sanga, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province. In this paper the trajectory calculation is Minimum of Curvature, a method that considers the well bore is formed between two arc surveys. The results of this study show that the primary cause of trajectory deviation in well X was an inhomogeneous formation and hardness differences of lithology that affected the inclination angle and direction away from the planned trajectory.
