MINAS SOUTH EAST FLANK DEVELOPMENT: AN OPPORTUNITY TO UNLOCK ADDITIONAL ONE MILLION BARRELS IN THE MATURE FIELD, MINAS, INDONESIA

For decades, Minas has been conducting infill programs to improve oil recovery, which mostly focused on the main segment area without specific development plans for the flank areas. A team was formed to identity the potential and develop plans for the South East (SE) Flank area at the end of 2010. The SE Flank Development Project, which started in January 2011, is a focus project to develop an area that has not been developed intensively. With a small number of both active producers (13 wells) and injectors (7 wells) and no pattern water flood, it can still deliver a reasonably good oil rate, with a total of 956 BOPD (Barrel of Oil Per Day) or 73 BOPD/well on average and ~97,000 BWIPD (Barrel of Water Injected Per Day). Based on the Minas field’s new three-dimensional (3D) earth model, this SE Flank area still has a potential, with a current recovery factor about 14%. Potential sands are coming from the BKA1 and BKA2 sands. Most existing wells were drilled until the BNB1 sand. The SE flank area has sand intervals with good thickness and continuity. New wells drilled in 2009 (three wells) and 2010 (one well) at high local structures have already proved the high potential of the SE Flank area. The three new drills in 2009 delivered an average initial production of 316 BOPD, while the one in 2010 delivered 179 BOPD. Furthermore, the project team has successfully drilled another six infill wells in 2013 with result: ? Achieving a total initial production of 4,500 BOPD. ? Delivering cumulative oil of 146,000 Barrels of Oil (BO) in first ten months.
