The aim of this paper is to study the land use and land cover changes using remote sensing and GIS. In addition, the mapping of land use and land cover in Elain forest. Structured questionnaire was constructed and distributed among 30 respondents. Two imageries from landsat 5 (TM) dated 02.11.2011 and 02.06.1984 were acquired and classified using supervised classification approach using ERDAS software. Also change detection was conducted between the imageries. The results showed that the seedlings were used for the afforestation by 56% compared to other methods. Also the findings indicate that the local right of residents use in grazing right is 40% and collection of forest products is 33%. The land use and land cover in Elain reserved forest is classified into five classes. The Acacia nilotica and Acacis millefera classes cover 15% and 35% in year 2011, respectively. These changes vegetation cover resulted to land degradation and water logging in part of the study area.
