Don't be Nervous! A Clinician's Approach to the Avian Neuroloaic Svstem

Although the avian neurologic examination varies little from that of the mammalian, the techniques for performing the assessment can be challenging. There are anatomic variations within the cranial and peripheral nerves, and understanding these is vital to a comprehensive neurologic exam. This lecture will focus on the neuroanatomic principles of birds and how they form the basis of the neurologic exam, important to avian veterinarians for determining the evaluation and possible diagnosis. Once the practitioner can perform and interpret the neurologic exam, serial neurologic assessments aid in establishing diagnosis and prognosis. Seizures, a common neurologic manifestation, arise from many etiologies, and the neurologic exam is also essential in the management of the seizuring patient.
