SIMULATION OF VEGETATED BED WITH PARTICLE METHOD

Open channel flow is popular in both experimental and numerical studies. The logarithm law and power law are widely utilized in practical and experimental studies to predict the open channel flow velocity profile if the relationship between channel bed roughness height and the velocity profile along the vertical section is available. Natural rivers and channels usually contain aquatic plants or vegetation near the channel bed, which introduce large bed roughness height and, thus, lead to difficulties in both experimental and computational studies. The traditional mesh-based methods use coefficients to overcome the channel bed roughness problems during this type of simulation. Nowadays, a new particle-based method has been developed to simulate open channel flow. However, it is still difficult to reproduce such vegetated beds in particle method because a proper way to show the effects from the roughness height cause by the vegetated bed in the particle method is missing. In addition, the efficiency and accuracy should be considered together in the simulation utilized by particle method. This paper presents some valuable approaches in particle method to representing large roughness height in open channel flow over vegetated beds and, indeed, the efficiency and accuracy of particle method in this type of open channel flow simulation are improved.
