In this study, combined UMBR(upflow multi-layer bio reactor)-activated sludge-clarifier system by single-sludge, called the KNR (Kwon’s nutrient removal), was operated for the treatment of sewage during 9 months. The UMBR using plug flow reaction can function as anaerobic tank, anoxic tank, primary settling tank, and thickener and requires low mixing energy by upflowing stream. The operational results of the KNR system show that it is effective in treating sewage of low C/N ratio or sewage without primary settling tank. During a whole period of this study, concentrations of SS, TCOD, TBOD, TN and TP in the effluent were 8.1 mg/L, 38.0 mg/L, 8.1 mg/L, 13.7 mg/L, and 0.8 mg/L, which corresponded to a removal efficiency of 96.8%, 90.0%, 95.0%, 68.4%, and 83.8%, respectively. The excess sludge production in the KNR system showed a decreased of about 28.3% in comparison with conventional activated sludge system.
