EXPLORING THE BENEFITS OF ADOPTING XML TECHNOLOGY FOR ADDRESSING DOCUMENTATION ISSUES IN THE WATER QUALITY INDUSTRY-A CLARK COUNTY WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT CASE STUDY

The water quality industry relies heavily on documentation for day-to-day operation and maintenance of facilities. Many municipalities have attempted to develop on-line systems to store and access this information. The development of these systems has relied primarily on existing open standards such as HTML. These general standards are extremely useful; however, they fail to provide standardization for specific document types across the industry. With XML standards now in place, the water quality industry now has the foundation required to develop industry standard information types. With these industry specific-standards in place, the industry could potentially benefit from greatly improved information flow and interoperability.
