CoS 08279 - A NEW SUGARCANE VARIETY FOR INCREASING CANE PRODUCTIVITY IN UTTAR PRADESH

The mid late variety CoS 08279 (Colk 8102 x Co 89003) was developed at U.P. Council of Sugarcane Research, Shahjahanpur. This variety was characterized by medium thick erect, self stripping stalks with profuse tillering, early growth vigour, fast growing, non lodging canes with good cane yield, quality and ratooning ability. The variety CoS 08279 recorded a mean cane yield 103.35 t/ha as compared to standard CoS 767 (73.96 t/ha) and higher level of CCS 13.63 t/ha. It possessed moderately resistant behavior to red-rot, wilt and GSD while low incidence of top and stem borer were found under natural conditions. On the basis of overall good performance the variety CoS 08279 was released by "State Varietal Release Committee" for general cultivation in Central and Western tracts of U.P. in 2012.
