Amateur radio has had a substantial presencein human space flight since the mid-1980s.For over 16 years, amateur radio spaceenthusiasts in the U.S., Russia, and Germanyhave worked diligently to develop, deploy andcoordinate operations of on-orbit amateurradio stations on the U.S. Space Shuttle andthe Russian space station Mir. Human spaceflight is expected to change in the near futureas the aerospace community rapidly evolvesits focus towards operations on theInternational Space Station (ISS). Theinternational amateur radio community isworking with the aerospace community tomake amateur radio a permanent fixture onISS. This update of last years paper willsummarize the status of the ISS program, thedevelopment of an initial station for use onboardISS, and the opportunities and plans forimplementing a permanent amateur radiostation on-board the ISS.
