Interface State and Coercivity in Nd-Fe-B Magnets

Coercivity enhanced Nd-Fe-B/Nd films have been fabricated with the similar procedure as reported so far. In order to investigate the origin of the coercivity enhancement, inverse sputtering experiments were performed on these films to etch the Nd overlayer selectively. Magnetization value does not depend on the etcing time t_e for t_e < 90 min., while the coercivity decreases gradually with increasing t_e. These results suggest an importance of the side surfaces of the Nd_2Fe_(14)B structure as a nucleation site.
