In a 'traditional' power system, electricity is generated in large power stations, transmitted to centers of consumption and then distributed to individual consumers. Since 1970, there has been a growing interest in the use of distributed generation units to provide electricity locally. Connecting a distributed generator to a network will inherently modify the voltage profile within that network. In most cases, the voltage will rise at the point where the distributed generator or generators are connected. The problem is that this may result in the voltage exceeding statutory limits and subsequently cause concern or worse for the network operator. This paper describes a new control strategy for the distributed generators which ensures that it supports the voltage control within a network and respects the operational constraints. At the same time maximizes its ability to deliver active power. A detailed model has been developed for this scheme and the results from extensive simulation studies are presented.
