It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to participate in the symposium in honor of Dr. Savio Woo's 70th birthday. Professor Woo has had a truly outstanding career in bioengineering as a scholar and leader that has spanned four decades. He has superb intellectual capability and made full use of it by working with strong dedication, continuous innovation, and outstanding leadership, culminating in his truly remarkable career as a superb scholar and great leader in Bioengineering. This symposium will have four sessions on Tissue Mechanics, Application of Robotics, Functional Tissue Engineering, and Computational Modeling. In his more than 300 original publications, 12 books, 140 book chapters and monographs, and 18 edited Congress proceedings, as well as over 850 national and international lectures, Professor Woo has made pioneering contributions in each of these areas. In Tissue Mechanics, Professor Woo has performed groundbreaking theoretical and experimental studies of the nonlinear viscoelastic and mechanical properties of biological tissues. In Application of Robotics to Analyze Joint Stability, Professor Woo has developed a novel robotic universal force-moment sensor testing system to assess the roles of various soft tissues in regulating the kinematics of synovial joints, including the knee and shoulder. Professor Woo advocated the Functional Tissue Engineering approach in the engineering of tissues, e.g., the use of gene therapy with bioscaffolds and extracellular matrix to improve the healing of injured ligaments and tendons. Professor Woo has been a leader in applying elegant Computational Modeling to the analysis of experimental studies on soft tissues, including the stress and motion on healing and repair of ligaments and tendons. Professor Woo has the remarkable capabilities to unite experiments and theories, and to combine basic research to clinical application. Thus, this Symposium is a most fitting recognition for Professor Woo's superb contributions to orthopaedic biomechanics in health and disease.
