This paper describes an improved regenerative braking control strategy and system for a dual motor electric vehicle (EV). The strategy is designed to make good brake performance through regulating regenerative braking and mechanical brake force, and to regenerate the energy from the front and rear motors simultaneously for maximizing energy recovery. There are two main schemes in the strategy: regenerative braking force and mechanical brake force distribution of front or rear wheels, and total brake force distribution between front and rear wheels. The system for the strategy includes two permanent magnetic synchronous motors (PMSMs) with motor drives allowing regenerative braking, and electric hydraulic brake (EHB) system with four disc-brakes for regulating mechanical braking force. Also, the safety issue of braking control strategy is discussed in this paper. The strategy is implemented on the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) of the vehicle and road tests show good agreement with the design target.
