A fundamental goal for bone tissue engineering is the production of bioceramic scaffolds, i.e. artificial templates for progenitor cell attachment and proliferation in a 3D architecture resembling the harvested tissue. An ideal scaffold should be bioactive, highly porous and should exhibit adequate mechanical properties. In addition, a resistant and at the same time permeable surface is required in order to have manageable samples. Among biomaterials suitable for bone tissue engineering, the 45 S5 Bioglass? plays an important role for its excellent level of bioactivity.
