Application of dust explosion protection for interconnected process equipment shall in principle always involve explosion isolation. If explosion isolation is not applied dust explosions in connected equipment can be very strong and design of explosion protection using established design guidelines is not possible. Explosion isolation is also recommended for thin pipelines. Explosion tests show that explosion propagation between process vessels is even possible for ducts with a 27 mm diameter. Several explosion isolation techniques have been discussed including important parameters for their design and factors affecting their reliability.
