SAGD - Produced Water Softening Challenges for Ion Exchange Resin (IER) Technology

This progress report discusses the many challenges and practical operating experience for Steam Assisted Gravity Drain (SAGD) Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) produced water softening and make up water ion exchange softening applications. To meet this challenge shallow shell strong acid cation (SAC) and weak acid cation resins (WAC) utilizing shallow shell technology have demonstrated improved performance over standard ion exchange resins (IER). Pilot plant data, field performance data, regeneration elution and rinse profile curve data is presented. Practical "lessons learned" to dealing with unexpected operational conditions and cleaning protocols are outlined.
