A change in JR East's station development policy: 'From stations merely to pass by, to stations where people gather.'

When we carry out railway station development to build commercial facilities, an absolutely essential condition to consider is to recover the investment cost with revenue. Since large scale station development requires huge amount of investment, in many of the cases, building commercial facilities alone do not give us sufficient revenue. The key to the success in station development depends on simultaneously fulfilling both recovering the investment cost and building commercially successful facilities. The framework of our station development, although it differs according to each individual case, tries to make full use of cooperation with other companies and local governments, so that we can earn necessary revenue. JR East endeavors to develop, by integrating "railway" and "commercial facilities," more attractive and unique stations utilizing fully the maximum potential of stations. This is carried out under our business model and our keyword "eki (meaning' stations')" and "increasing attractiveness of our stations," and with co-operation with other companies and local governments. Here, I would like to give you a brief outline of our station development.
