The developed GC/MS SIM method was able to achieve silicon speciation in complex matrices such as light petroleum products. Despite contamination problems, several silicon species such as siloxanes and ethoxysilane were identified and quantified for the first time in refined products at very different concentrations. However, selective detection by SIM mode does not take into account all species and difference about total silicon measured by ICP-OES was observed. Future works will be developed by the application of a multi technique approach including GC coupled to a specific detection for silicon to improve sensitivity and selectivity and high resolution mass spectrometry to progress in the identification of new unidentified species.
