In this study, low rank Turkish coals have been subjected to non-isothermal pyrolysis process in the presence of hybrid poplar which selected as a biomass material. In this context, some Turkish lignites collected from Gediz, Soma, Elbistan, and Askale regions have been blended with hybrid poplar, and thermogravimetric technique has been applied to determine pyrolysis characteristics of both original samples and their blends. Hybrid poplar was added to coal samples as much as 10 wt% of coal to obtain coal/biomass blends. Lignite samples, hybrid poplar, and their blends were heated from ambient to 900°C by heating rate of 40°C/min under dynamic nitrogen flow. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of the pyrolytic chars from lignites have also been investigated.
