AshPro is a modeling tool that integrates ash behavior models with boiler computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to evaluate slagging and fouling in coal-fired boilers. It uses boiler design and operational conditions as well as model input such as ash particle size distribution and chemical composition from computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) analysis. The AshPro tool was applied to evaluate convective pass fouling with three different PRB coals for a 512 MW tangential-fired boiler at Alliant Energy's Columbia Energy Center. The impacts of ash particle size distribution and chemical composition of different coals on fouling deposit formation and growth, strength development, and deposit removal was investigated. The results could be used to support fuel switching. Sootblowing cleaning effectiveness with different sootblowing frequencies, pressure of the medium, and lag angle of the sootblower nozzle were also evaluated and the results could be used to optimize sootblowing system performance.
