An Analysis of Foreign Interests and Political Instability in the Fiji Islands

Against the background of the importance of foreign investments to the development efforts of poor nations,this paper examines the relationship of foreign interests and political instability in countries of the Third World.It explores a range of interests of foreign governments,corporations and private investor groups and political instability within nation states.The data suggests that foreign interest groups,to further their own subtle interests,have effectively contributed to the discontinuity of good governance,accountability and transparency in democratically elected governments.Countries that are most susceptible to foreign manipulation are former colonial states with diverse racial and ethnic populations.In this paper,Fiji is used as a case study to illustrate the negative impact of foreign interests on democratic institutions of an island state.The continued interference by foreign governments has led to a loss of interest in democracy and elections at large by a large segment of the country's population.
