Turbulence modeling for in-cylinder flows in engines

The paper reviews some recent and promising Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models for predictions of in-cylinder engine flows. The aim is to assess advantages and disadvantages of various models from the point of accuracy but also everyday applicability in calculations of engines. Extensions of such models to the hybrid RANS/LES (Large Eddy Simulation) approach are also discussed. The results will be shown for the intake-port flow obtained with two-equation k-ε model, four-equation eddy-viscosity k-ε-ζ-f model, the non-linear k-ε-ζ-f model and the full Reynolds-stress model. Beside RANS turbulence models, due attention is given to the 'hybrid' (universal) wall modeling which is the most appropriate for engine applications.
