Automated geological lineament extraction and analysis using satellite data for large-scale construction site investigation

Site investigation in wide area is necessary for large-scale construction activities. Extraction and analysis of geological lineaments are essential items in the site investigation reports in Korea and those geological features reveal not only surface topographic characteristics but also underground structures. The geological lineaments have been manually extracted by naked eyes of geologists on aerial photography or satellite image so the results can be subjective and sometimes show distorted directions or distribution. to overcome those defects we designed optimized extraction and analysis processes, and programmed Topoliner software for automatic extraction and analysis of the lineaments. In Korea, ground surface is covered with vegetations and many man-made objects so they hide and split the geological lineaments. Hough transform algorithm was adopted to discriminate and extract lineaments in the image because this algorithm can link disconnected line segments to single line. Landsat datasets covering Korean peninsula were collected and KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite)-I data were also added in some part of regions. The Topoliner was tested by using the satellite image dataset and the results were validated with in-situ investigation re-cords.
