In times of ever shorter development cycles on one hand and higher expectation levels from the customers on the other hand, it is necessary to utilize modern design and simulation tools to speed up the development process. Time to market is becoming a critical success factor. In the presentation I will illustrate the process on the development of a trailed pneumatic drill. The drill is for maximum area capacity and a working width of up to 12m [Fig. 1]. I will illustrate the tools and methods that have been applied to design and optimise the machine. Overcoming the challenge of reducing the transport width to below 3m in an efficient way is one of the main design tasks for such an implement. Modern kinematics software was used to simulate field work and transport and the involved folding action. The result is a simple folding mechanism coupled with a unique coulter adjustment. In a second step the frame work was optimised via FEM calculations. Building the functional model and first field tests were executed to confirm and compare with theoretical assumptions. Strain gauge tests gave valuable input about stress levels in the various field situations. The measured values fed into the layout of the test track. A duration test was performed to confirm life time durability.
