Machinery monitoring systems, as well as the systems developed for testing and controlling machines are increasingly distributed. Local machinery monitoring systems incorporate FGPA and DSP processors to internally distribute signal processing tasks. Wired and Wireless communications allow local monitoring systems to communicate with plant wide or internet wide data storage and analysis systems. Technical data management systems allow machinery analysts to sort and organize data from a wide network of machinery. This paper describes the technologies used for distributed data acquisition and signal processing as well as the technologies available for communications and data networking. Both a technology perspective and a machinery vibration analyst's perspective are included.
