Florida DOT Polymer Enhanced BMP Application for Beach Sand, Highway 98

Polymer enhanced best management practices (PEBMP) are commonly used in the Southeastern US and have shown significant performance improvement over conventional BMPs. Florida Department of Transportation undertook an emergency repair project on Highway 98 after severe damage caused by hurricane Denis in 2005. A polymer enhanced soft armor method was applied over a 14 mile length of beach sand along Highway 98 facing the ocean. Following rain storms, tropical depression and a category one hurricane there has been little to no erosion over the last 18 months. This project has demonstrated significant cost reduction and performance enhancement over conventional BMPs.
