Video contribution from the field is subject to increasing economic and time constraints. Every capital and operational expense is scrutinized and budgets are tight. Reliable techniques to deliver video from the field where the equipment costs are a fraction of the costs of previous technologies are desired. Reducing the operational expenses of satellite transmission is a short-term goal. Simplifying the technology to allow the onsite video equipment operator to also perform the tasks previously performed by a dedicated technician is a long-term goal. There are solutions at hand that can achieve these cost reductions and provide the additional benefits of live video transmission, even while the transmission platform is in motion. What has made this possible are the advances in three technologies: video encoding, satellite antenna, and satellite modem bandwidth control. Video encoding using proprietary algorithms for contribution use can now achieve the video quality of MPEG-2 at 2 Mbps using only 512 kbps of bandwidth. Low profile, auto-pointing satellite antennas can now reliably transmit and remain locked on the satellite, even when moving at up to 300 kilometers per hour, and be mounted on small vehicles, such as sports utility vehicles (SUVs). And, satellite modem technologies have assisted in both providing additional bandwidth compression, and in sharing a common pool of bandwidth in multiple vehicle environments.
