The 2008 Bowlby Memorial Conference, "Terror Within and Without, Attachment and Disintegration: Clinical Work on the Edge", constituted the third and final conference in a trilogy of Bowlby conferences that took as their focus the impact of experiences of trauma on attachment and mental health throughout the life cycle. The first two conferences were "Attachment and Trauma" in 2006, and "Shattered States: Disorganised Attachment and Its Repair" in Bowlby's centenary year, 2007. The 2008 conference took as its theme the crucial role of attachment relationships in the modulation of states of fear, and the consequences for the individual, family, community, and nation state when this protective function of attachment fails.
