In Germany the required verification of the stability of dam plants is laid down in the likewise titled norm DIN (German Industrial Norm) 19700:2004-07 (DIN 19700). Since the 1986 version of this norm, in the regulations it has been stipulated that the load condition "leak in the sealing" should be regarded as a special case. With good reason, both at that time and in the current new version, details of the scenarios to be considered within the framework of this load condition (leak configurations) have not been exactly defined. This contribution deals with quantitative aspects of dam seepage in connection with this problem by taking several cases of dams with upstream facings as examples. As a result it can be seen, that a dam design redundant of hydraulic safety installations to cover the dangers from sealing damage is in general of great significance.
