Over the last years significant improvements have been achieved on the microfinishing of tribological contacts. It is nowadays possible to produce deterministic asperities (textures) with sub-micron accuracy, and distribute them arbitrarily over the lubricated surfaces. Textures can improve some characteristics of lubricated contacts. Herringbone-grooved journal bearings are widely used for their high stiffness and stability [1], for example. Also, surface micropockets may serve as additional reservoirs for lubricant under severe starvation conditions.
