As open systems evolve, larger and more complex distributed applications will be widely available in an open, heterogeneous computing environment. In order to ensure correct, reliable and efficient operations, applications must be monitored and controlled. Unfortunately, most existing distributed applications are not properly equipped to manage since they are in general, not designed with management in mind. Furthermore, there exist a wide variety of types and sizes of distributed applications. The authors examines the need for a generic distributed applications management framework. They present the design and implementation of a generic, distributed application management system which is based on a simple model called the DAM model. This generic application management system can be used as a basis for developing management tools for a variety of distributed applications.
