Reaction time and contrast threshold methods were applied when investigating the spectral sensitivity of peripheral vision at mesopic and low photopic luminance levels. The results of RT and CT experiments indicated increased spectral sensitivity of short wavelengths at mesopic luminance levels when the luminance level decreased. Further on, the CT data indicated that spectral sensitivity at mesopic luminance levels is affected by eccentricity. The data was used to model peripheral spectral sensitivity at low photopic and mesopic luminance levels. In the approach adopted by the European consortium MOVE, emphasis was placed on visual performance of night-time driving and the attempt to describe mesopic spectral sensitivity in a realistic way. The result is a model of mesopic spectral sensitivity as a linear transition between the scotopic V'(λ) and the photopic V(λ) functions in the luminance region. To be internationally accepted and used, a new mesopic photometric system has to be adopted and recommended by the CIE. The data of this work and the MOVE are forwarded to the work of the TC1-58, which aims to propose a visual performance based model for mesopic photometry to be used as the basis of a future standard.
