A Security Protocol for Scalable and Privacy-Preserving Car-to-X eSafety Applications

Car-to-Car and Car-to-Infrastructure (Car-to-X) communication enable a broad range of esafety applications, such as local danger warnings, traffic light pre-emption, or traffic information via road side units. While these functionalities inspire a new era of safety in transportation, new security requirements need to be considered in order to prevent attacks on these systems. Of particular interest are trustworthy message exchange to ensure reliable, safe system operation, as well as protection of identity and location against undesired privacy infringements. This paper discusses potential threats and their respective security requirements. Different approaches for enabling trustworthy message exchange are compared, specifically focussing on privacy, efficiency and scalability. A protocol for obtaining pseu donymous digital certificates is presented and the distribution of those certificates within a VANET is analyzed.
