With the continued miniaturization of consumer electronic devices, demand for capacitors with greater volumetric efficiencies is increasing. In small capacitor case sizes, tantalum capacitors satisfy this demand by providing solutions with the highest volumetric efficiencies, values approaching 10{sup}6μC/cc, as compared to ceramic capacitor technologies. To maintain this performance lead over MLCCs, both new tantalum powders and anode designs need to be commercialized within the next several years. Cabot is addressing this technology challenge with a range of programs, developing new high CV/g powders using Na reduction technologies, commercializing new process technologies for both tantalum particle synthesis and agglomeration, and exploring new concepts in anode design.
