Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to assess the internal quality of fruits as a nondestructive measurement. This research was to design and develop an NIR on-line detecting device for soluble solids content (SSC) prediction and classificationon a small-size fruits grading machine. Small-size fruits were transported individually in this machine, therefore the device was design to acquire spectrum of single fruit rapidly according to the transport speed. A calibration model was established based on NIR spectra of loquat samples and their corresponding SSC. This model was applied for SSC prediction and classification. According to the grading policy, samples were classified into three grades according to the predicted SSC values. The results can meet the project requirement that the classification error rate was less than 6%.
