The release of arsenic resulting from mining activityis a major source of water contamination worldwide. Arsenic-containing minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) are abundant virtually everywhere in the Earth's crust. As a result of oxidation of such arsenic-bearing minerals in mining processes, arsenic concentration in mining wastewaters can reach levels as high as several hundreds of mg L~(-1). Bioleaching is no different in this sense. [1]
