This configuration possesses several advantageous features. Firstly, the outer-rotor topology enables the rotor directly coupling with the wind blades, which saves complicated mechanical transmission. Secondly, since this rotor has neither PMs nor field windings, it can provides high mechanical integrity which is essential to handle those intermittent strong winds Thirdly, since both the PMs and DC field windings can fully utilize the space of inner stator, the flux leakage can be minimized while the power density can be improved.
